Angel Food Ministries Provides Food Relief to Florida Food Bank

Pembroke Park, FL (MMD Newswire) October 14, 2009 -- This past Thursday, thousands of pounds of food stored by the Daily Bread Food Bank were destroyed in a fire that broke out Thursday night at a Lauderdale Lakes warehouse. The Daily Bread lost over 90,000 pounds of food due to the fire and smoke damage.

The Daily Bread Food Bank opened their doors in 1982. Over the past twenty-five years DBFB has been providing food for those in need and distributing to over 800 agencies across Southern Florida. DBFB is also an affiliate of Feeding America and a member of the Florida Association of Food Banks, together reaching over 600,000 people in need.

When Angel Food Ministries heard of this tragedy, they took immediate action to provide any means necessary for providing food relief to the local Ft. Lauderdale Food Bank. CEO, Pastor Joe Wingo said, "Food banks really do the work of saints, feeding those who truly wouldn't eat otherwise. When we heard the news of the fire, we were worried for the people they helped. We have no choice but to offer what we can. Together, we serve a higher good."

AFM, a non-profit, non-denominational food co-op, gathered local and national resources to provide $115,000 worth of food to DBFB. Over 40,000 meals will be delivered to provide relief to the food bank. Food Bank Director, Sonia Zumiga was overwhelmed by this donation, stating, "I am so happy because this is a great donation and it will help feed a lot of people. You do not have any idea how helpful this is. Too many people come hungry every day and we cannot feed everyone. Thank you so much, thank you, thank you!"

The 40,000 meals will be delivered on Thursday, October 15, 2009 at 11:00 AM. Sonia Zumiga will receive the food at the Daily Bread Food Bank, located at 5850 NE 32nd Ave. Miami, FL 33142.
